Turtle Island At-Large
Turtle Island At-Large Unit is a gathering for LANDS members and observers in North America. We are part of the Diaspora Bloc of LANDS. Majority of the Unit participants are diaspora Jamaican; however we welcome (and have had significant contributions from) participants who have no connection to Jamaica.
We meet every other Wednesday at 9pm ET. Our meeting time is subject to change, based on the schedules of the persons in the unit.
Mission
As the gathering of Jamaican diaspora in North America, we aim to:
Facilitate political education for diaspora Jamaicans through joint study
Encourage diaspora support for campaigns and projects led by LANDS or other local organizers that align with LANDS objectives
Highlight issues affecting the North American Jamaican diaspora and present a leftist perspective for analyzing such issues.
Activities
Book Club
has had an active book club since May of 2020. We incorporate joint reading discussions in our meetings. The books we have covered are:
The Black Jacobins by C. L. R. James
Neocolonialism: The Last Stage of Imperialism by Kwame Nkrumah
The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon (in progress)
Small Projects
In an effort to provide more avenues for active contributions to LANDS from the diaspora, Turtle Island At-Large Unit initiated several small group projects. These projects are conceptualized, led and worked exclusively by Unit participants. Meetings for these projects occur separate from Unit meetings.
